Hand made in Ireland. Approximately 8½" x 8½" in size. This St. Brigid's Cross is hand made from rushes gathered from the river Shannon, to the same traditional design used by Bridgid alomost 1500 years ago.
On St. Brigid's Eve, crosses from rushes gathered in local fields are made in preparation of the Patron Saint's Feast-Day, which occurs on the 1st Febuary.
The St.Brigid's Cross is traditionally placed over the door to protect people from illness or bad luck. It was believed to help protect against fire, storm and lightening. The St. Brigid's Cross, a symbol of eternal life, can also be found on many graves in Ireland; left there by people after visiting a loved one.
