The Celtic Cross is modelled on crosses carved in stone found among the ruins of monasteries around Ireland. They were known as the Irish High Cross and the most famous is the High Cross at Clonmacnois, founded by St, Ciaran in A.D. 545 on the banks of the Shannon in the county of Offaly.
