Is minic a bhí gránna gnaíúil agus dona dathúil. Pronunciation: iss minik a vee grangah gnayee-ool ahgus doh-nuh dah-hool. Meaning:"It's often ugly was mannerly and handsome was horrible."

Sourced from the forests of Ireland, these hand-crafted traditional Irish one-piece Blackthorn Walking Sticks / Shillelaghs are selected and cut from the impenetrable thickets of the Blackthorn.

Handcrafted in Ireland, the root handle is carved and varnished, the vicious thorns on the shank are trimmed and rounded off. The shank is covered in a protective coating of black enamel, the end is tipped with a copper ferrule. These are not fancy canes, they tend to be a little crooked and knobbly; that is what gives each their distinctive character. No two are alike, each interesting and unique, designed by nature herself.

Perfect for leisure and health walking, hiking, collecting, or as a decorative piece. Not recommended for orthopedic use. Blackthorn is very hard and tough but light-weight. Each walking stick shown on our pages is one of a kind and are not part of a series. When we receive a new shipment, each individual stick is named, numbered and then photographed so our customers can see exactly what they are buying. As each stick sells we remove it from the web site. Although we may reuse the names and numbers over again they will not be the same stick you might have seen on a previous visit.

Due to their size and shape, walking sticks cannot be gift wrapped. A ribbon with personalized gift message is available. A card with name of stick and a brief history of Blackthorn is included. Due to lumps, bumps, curves, twists, long tapers, and free-form handles, measurements are a close approximate.

Please Note: Recently it is becoming increasingly more difficult to obtain sticks due to a shortage and even more difficult again to find thicker sticks or those with knob handles. This is due in large to the new EU regulations which forces many farmers throughout Ireland to cut their blackthorn hedge grows down to a minimum size regulation.
